In this tutorial , we will look into how to make some abstract visual effects, mainly we will see how filters can be used with Layer Blend modes which turn out some great result.
Do remember, this is just a process, using the techniques explained below you can apply this to almost anything, here I will be using only brushes, you can use other elements too. Once you get the hang of how things work, you can experiment on your own, and use variations.
That’s what we should get at the end:
Open a new canvas, go to the File > New, you can also hold down the Ctrl key and double click in the empty space to get the New dialogue box.
You can use these settings or even make a larger canvas. For the purpose of this tutorial I am making a small sized canvas.
Click OK.
From the toolbar select the Bucket tool, and fill in black color. You can also press ALT+ Backspace, to fill in the foreground color.
Insert a new layer, open up the Layer Panel , either from Window > Layer or press F7, Click the create new layer button, rename the layer to Clouds. This Clouds Layer will be used to apply the cloud filter.
From the filter menu, Filter > Render > Clouds
This is what you should have in your Cloud Layer

Hi awesome tutorial soo far buttttt when I merge the color burn layer with the first blur(filter) layer it didn’t keep the color from the color burn, it just turned it back to that same color at the blur layer. What did I do wrong?
I’ve looked and looked but I can’t seem to find the purpose for the Clouds layer. It seems to disappear from the layer stack towards the end of the tutorial. Should I have adjusted it’s blend mode or merged it with another layer? Other than that, the effect is nice.
Yeah, mine didn’t keep the color either. Also, what’s the deal with the cloud layer? Didn’t see the point in it.
